Taylor Russell McKenzie was born on July 18, 1994 in Vancouver, British Columbia, and was raised in Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal. [1][2The Russell was born to a black father and a white mother, is biracial, and grew up primarily with her mother's side of the family. Russell said that her skin color was the primary reason for her feeling rejected by her peers as a child. The family struggled financially and were constantly in a state of flux, moving their lives sixteen different times to follow her father's job. Russell stated that in spite of all the struggles they faced, there was always an opportunity to reinvent, to create something new. Russell's parents had financial difficulties and she was constantly moving. Russell was just 18 when she began her first acting class. She saved her money from work to purchase the car she needed and drove to Los Angeles to audition. If her funds ran out and she returned home, she went back to work until she was able to earn enough to audition again. She continued this routine for four more years until she received her first TV part.
